Mall library closing for remodeling beginning DECEMBER 24
Reopening March 2013 as...

logo and link to more information After months of input from the public and staff, SHKS Architects have developed preliminary, schematic drawings (.pdf) for The Mall Library Connection, a new type of library facility at Westfield Vancouver shopping mall that will open in March 2013 in place of Vancouver Mall Community Library. [More information in an August 2012 FVRL news release]

The designs will undergo fine-tuning prior to the start of construction in early January. The current facility's last open day will be Sunday, Dec. 23. Look for more details about the closure in coming weeks on the project page.

photo of Nancy Tessman The lay of the land

One of the most exciting aspects of coming to this library district was the sheer scope of it. Did you know that FVRL covers more than 4,200 square miles? (see the map) That's a lot of territory!

As I travel around our district getting to know our libraries and you, our patrons, I'm struck not only by the beauty of this region but also by the diversity of the communities we serve -- from urban Vancouver neighborhoods to isolated homesteads in Klickitat County. Wherever you are, your particular needs figure in the mix as we plan FVRL's future.

In this month of giving thanks, I'd like to express my gratitude for the strong support for libraries that I encounter everywhere I travel. A recent heartwarming example was the grand opening celebration for Yacolt Library Express -- a little library made possible by a small community that worked together to make it happen.

I hope to see many of you at the Foundation's Nov. 14 Authors & Illustrators Dinner, an important opportunity to support our libraries. I'd also enjoy hearing from you anytime, via email to contact@fvrl.org (please include "Nancy Tessman" in the subject line). Happy Thanksgiving!

Nancy Tessman
FVRL Executive Director
