Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month

Observed each year from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of people of Hispanic and Latino heritage.

How does FVRLibraries celebrate this month?

Fort Vancouver Regional Libraries celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. First recognized nationally in 1968 and expanded to a month in 1988, this observance begins on September 15 to coincide with the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, and also includes Mexico’s Independence Day on September 16 and Chile’s on September 18.

Through books, programs, and cultural resources, FVRLibraries reflects these experiences year-round while using this month as a special opportunity to recognize heritage, share stories, and invite discovery across our community.

What is the difference between Hispanic and Latino?

There are a lot of connections between the Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States so our celebration of National Hispanic Month also includes Latino Americans.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Books in our Collection

Help Us Grow & Improve

We are always looking for ways to expand our collections and programming so that they are interesting and inclusive to the communities we serve. To this end, our community is encouraged to submit original programming and resource selections for us to consider.

Have ideas from programming? We’d love to hear suggestions for cultural events, educational presentations, book discussions, and community celebrations.

Know of great resources we should add? Help us discover books, films, music, or other materials that would enrich our collections.
